Fungus gnats: moisture first, then the traps

Tiny dark flies around your pots are usually fungus gnats. They breed in moist, organic potting mix. Adults are mostly a nuisance. Larvae live in the soil. The fix starts with letting the top soil dry, then sticky traps for adults, then a Bti soil treatment if larvae keep coming. Give yourself a few weeks. Overlapping generations take time to break.

Are these fungus gnats or fruit flies?

Fungus gnats look like tiny mosquitoes. Adults are about 1/16 to 1/8 inch long, dark, with slender legs and relatively long antennae. Wings often show a Y-shaped vein near the tip when you look closely. They rest on soil, foliage, windows, and lamps, and they are weak fliers.

Fruit flies are chunkier and hang around ripe fruit and kitchen scraps. Vinegar traps catch fruit flies. They do little for fungus gnats. If the cloud lifts when you water or poke the soil, you are dealing with a plant-pot problem.

What do the larvae look like, and why does wet soil matter?

Larvae are pale, legless maggots with shiny black heads. Mature ones reach about 1/4 inch. They feed on fungi and decaying organic matter in damp mix. In high numbers they can chew root hairs and soft roots.

University IPM programs are clear on the habitat: fungus gnats thrive where potting media stay moist and rich in organic matter. Peat-heavy mixes that stay wet are classic. Overwatering feeds the fungi larvae eat and keeps the surface soft enough for egg laying. Dry the top layer and the life cycle stalls.

A houseplant that wilts while the soil is still wet may have root trouble from wetness itself, from larvae, or from both. Read the soil before you add more water.

How fast is the life cycle?

Indoors, generations overlap. Females lay dozens to a couple hundred eggs in moist soil cracks. Eggs hatch in a few days. Larvae feed for about one to two weeks, then pupate near the surface. Adults emerge a few days later and live about a week.

At typical room temperatures, egg to adult can take roughly three to four weeks (UC IPM notes about 17 days near 75°F). That is why one trap day or one dry weekend rarely ends it. Plan on several weeks of drier surface soil plus follow-through on adults and larvae.

How do I confirm which pot is the source?

  1. Watch which pot launches flies when you water or tap the rim
  2. Place a yellow sticky card near the soil of each suspect plant
  3. Optional larva check: set a raw potato chunk cut-side down on the soil; check in a few days for maggots, then discard the chunk
  4. Rule out drains: moist debris in sinks and floor drains can also breed fungus gnats (Maryland Extension notes this)

Isolate a heavy source plant from clean pots while you treat. Do not move an infested pot next to seedlings or soft new growth.

What is the step-by-step fix?

Work the moisture first. Traps and larvicides help. They do not replace drying the surface.

  1. Let the top soil dry: allow the top 1 to 2 inches to dry before you water again (UMN, Wisconsin, Arizona Extension). Larvae struggle in dry media, and females lay fewer eggs on a dry surface
  2. Check before you pour: Grove's watering task is a check: does this plant need water today? Lift the pot, look at the soil, then water or wait
  3. Empty saucers: standing water keeps the mix wet and the breeding going
  4. Bottom-water when it helps: set the pot in a tray for 15 to 30 minutes, then dump leftover water so roots drink while the surface stays drier
  5. Clean debris: remove dead leaves and soft organic junk on the soil
  6. Add sticky traps: place yellow cards near the soil to catch adults and track progress
  7. Treat larvae if numbers stay high: use a product with Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. israelensis (Bti), such as Mosquito Bits or similar labeled products, as a soil treatment. Follow the label. Repeat on the schedule the label or extension guidance suggests (often about every 5 to 7 days for several weeks)
  8. Optional surface barrier: a 1/2 to 1 inch layer of coarse sand or fine gravel can make egg laying harder (Wisconsin Horticulture)

Expect three to four weeks of consistent habits before the room feels quiet again.

Do sticky traps get rid of fungus gnats by themselves?

No. Yellow sticky traps catch adults and show whether counts are falling. They reduce egg laying. They do not kill larvae already in the soil.

Use traps as a monitor and a helper. Put them close to the soil surface. Replace when coated. If cards stay full while the soil stays wet, the breeding site is still open.

What about Bti / Mosquito Bits?

Bti (Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. israelensis) is the biological option university extensions name most often for fungus gnat larvae in pots. It targets fly larvae in the mix. It does not knock down adults, eggs, or pupae in one shot.

Products sold as Mosquito Bits, Gnatrol, and similar Bti soil treatments appear in UC IPM, Wisconsin Horticulture, Maryland Extension, and Minnesota Extension guidance. Apply as the label directs, with enough water to move the active ingredient into the zone where larvae feed. Because Bti does not persist well indoors, repeat applications are normal until hatching slows.

Use only the israelensis subspecies. Caterpillar Bt products will not work on fungus gnats.

Should I use hydrogen peroxide?

University IPM pages for fungus gnats center on moisture management, sticky traps, and Bti. They do not treat hydrogen peroxide as a primary control.

DIY peroxide drenches circulate widely as a contact knockdown. Any effect is brief because peroxide breaks down quickly into water and oxygen, so there is little residual protection for eggs still hatching. Overuse can disturb soil microbes. If you try a diluted 3% household peroxide mix, treat it as optional and temporary, keep moisture and Bti as the backbone, and never invent stronger recipes than the product label or a trusted horticulture source supports.

When do larvae actually threaten plants?

Adults do not bite people and do not feed on leaves. Larvae are the stage that can hurt roots.

Risk rises when:

UC IPM notes significant root damage and even plant death in houseplants and interiorscapes when moist, organically rich soil supports high larval numbers. Wisconsin Horticulture calls serious root damage rare in typical home settings, with adults mainly a cosmetic nuisance. Both can be true: most home infestations are annoying first. Seedlings and struggling plants deserve faster moisture correction and larval treatment.

If a plant keeps wilting in wet soil, check roots and drainage. Gnats may be a sign of the wetness problem, not the only cause.

When should I escalate?

Stay the course for a few weeks if adults are declining and the surface is drying between waterings. Escalate when:

Escalation options extensions discuss: repeat Bti on schedule, potato monitoring plus disposal of larvae-laden chunks, sand/gravel surface barrier, repotting into fresh, well-draining mix after washing roots if the media is degraded and stays soggy, and (rarely) a houseplant-labeled adulticide used outdoors if possible, always with cultural control still in place. UC IPM generally does not recommend insecticides as the home first line.

Tossing a severely infested, declining plant can be the kindest call when roots are already gone.

Moisture is the recurring theme. Same idea as careful watering for root health: wet soil invites trouble long before leaves look dramatic.
